What Up Family?
Welcome to The Edit with Aaron Seawood, a lifestyle letter serving a weekly dose of real estate, culture, and wisdom—all in three minutes or less. Let’s dive in.
Real Estate Remix
Over a year ago, NYC introduced a bill that made renting an AirBnB significantly harder. Recently, there’s been talk about walking back on some restrictions. For reference, before the original bill was introduced, NYC had about 23,000 AirBnB options. Last month, there were just 3,700. The bill updates would increase the guest limit from two to four and allow homeowners to rent out their homes while on vacation (previously, they had to live there while renting it out, meaning you couldn’t supplement income while on vacation). While the regulations initially intended to preserve the affordability of long-term rental spaces, it doesn’t seem to be working. Plus, it puts undue pressure on tourism prices. In September, the average cost for a hotel room reached its highest nightly rate at $417/night. I’m hopeful these adjustments lead to the solutions we need that give homeowners an avenue for additional income while ensuring rental inventory and prices reflect a fair market value.
NYC Insider: What’s Happening This Week
I look forward to checking out the Brooklyn Museum’s recently opened exhibit, ‘Solid Gold’. It coincides with the museum’s 200th anniversary (!!) and features over 500 gold objects, including fashion, jewelry, paintings, sculptures, and more. Gold has symbolized beauty, honor, joy, ritual, success, and wealth throughout the years, influencing cultures and legacies worldwide. The holidays feel like a good time to visit, but if you can’t, you’ll have time to catch it in the new year since the exhibit runs until July.
Weekly Gem 💎
Growth Isn’t Glamorous
Shoutout to Daryl Black for this gem. Most people talk positively about growth and the upsides of leveling up, but people don’t often skip over how hard growth can be. How unglamorous. Growth is a process of stretching, breaking, and letting go, and it comes at a cost—often to the detriment of our comfort, mindset, and relationships. But growth is essential. This process enables us to mature and shape us for what’s next. Now ask yourself, ‘Am I willing to ensure discomfort for destiny’?
